I am an emeritus U.S. Geological Survey volcanologist based in Vancouver, Washington, USA. I received a B.S. in physics from the University of Notre Dame and a Ph.D. in Planetary Science from the California Institute of Technology. My passions include science, photography, and the natural world. During my research career, I have been fortunate to travel to exotic places such as Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand, and to work on active volcanic systems in Hawaii, the U.S. Pacific Northwest, and Yellowstone National Park. Wildlife photography has been a serious pursuit of mine for more than two decades, with recent excursions to South Africa, Costa Rica, the Galápagos Islands, and Australia.
